Secondary Containment You must install secondary containment around your container to catch leaking oil - usually a drip tray or a bund surrounding the container. Fixed tanks must be bunded, others can use a bund or drip trays. Secondary containment doesn’t include: • ‘Twin-walled’ tanks with strengthened outer skins • Oil separators. A bund must hold 110% of the container’s capacity. If not, your secondary containment must have enough capacity Secondary containment for a drum must have a capacity equal or greater than 25% of the drum. Single containers Secondary containment for fixed tanks, mobile bowsers, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) and other single containers, must hold 110% of the container’s capacity. For example, if your container holds 2,500 litres, your secondary containment must have a 2,750 litre capacity. Multiple containers Secondary containment containing fixed tanks, mobile bowsers or IBCs must have a capacity equal to the greater of these two measurements: • 25% of the combined capacity of all containers. • 110% of the largest container’s capacity. If the containers are hydraulically linked but have separate secondary containment, each separate secondary containment (i.e. each bund or drip tray) must have a capacity of at least 110% of the combined container capacity. for the container it’s holding.
