Current guidelines give the range of equipment that must be adhered to if conformity is being claimed. There are three classes of accuracy that are applied to equipment depending on use. Class I is the most accurate and is used on tools such as engineer’s rules, where high accuracy is required. Class II is the next level and might be used on equipment such as tape measures. Class III is the least demanding level and might be used on equipment which can be affected by stretching. Items such as top quality surveyor’s tapes would achieve Class III accuracy. Tools that do not carry a class marking may be less accurate and so could cause problems where high tolerances are required.
