Creating a safe, healthy and sustainable world

WELCOME

Our world is rapidly changing and the climate change challenges that we face are making us all rethink the way we live. I am personally passionate about ensuring that the younger generations in our communities, including my own children, grow up in a more sustainable world. We put sustainability at the forefront of our minds with what we do whether that be investing in our people, working with our global supply chain and developing sustainable solutions both on product and service to support our customers in achieving their own sustainability objectives. We believe that we are helping drive the sustainable agenda and lead the industry to a more sustainable future for us all.

Chris Wakeman MANAGING DIRECTOR

At Bunzl Greenham we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment by considering our actions and working with customers and suppliers to find solutions that support a more sustainable way of working. The contents of this Sustainability Report reflects our long-standing commitment to protect our environment, secure our supply chain and promote the wellbeing of the global community in which we operate.

Sustainability Champions Sustainability at Bunzl Our global scale, vast experience, flexibility and unwavering passion means we are perfectly placed to help build a better world. We are working proactively to help solve the problems society faces, both now and in the future, whether that is helping our customers innovate, improving the ways we do things to be more efficient, or partnering with communities and other stakeholders to make a difference. We understand our role as an influential leader in the transition to a more sustainable and equitable future. Globally, Bunzl has developed a team of 14 sustainability leaders sharing best practice across the Group. In the UK and Ireland Business Area, 4 of these leaders work with their divisional teams to implement the Group Sustainability Strategy and support our customers’ sustainability objectives. At Greenham we have a dedicated Sustainability Team solely focussed on sharing best practice within the business, driving the sustainability agenda and developing tools to support our customers on their sustainability journey. The Sustainability Champions are a group of dedicated volunteers across our Service Centres, whose main jobs range from Account Managers to Marketing Assistants. As Champions, their role is to share ideas and strategies within the group, distribute resources and information to the wider teams in their Service Centres, and to raise awareness through events such as World Environment Day. Having the Champions support has been invaluable to the Sustainability Team and Greenham.

We are now a signatory of the UN’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C and the Race to Zero .

The summer of 2022 saw extreme weather conditions across the country with new record high temperatures recorded at over 56 weather stations. The impacts of climate change are already with us and are affecting the communities least able to withstand it. Without concerted and ambitious action from companies and governments, climate change will continue to have a significant effect on our businesses and our daily lives. Our solutions significantly reduce road miles and minimise both our own and our customers’ carbon footprint by consolidating multiple items into single mixed pallet deliveries. We’re also playing our part by cutting emissions across our own business – because it’s critical that we support the global efforts to limit warming. When Bunzl plc joined the UN’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C and Race to Zero, we committed to obtaining Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) validation of our existing Scope 1 and 2 emissions reduction targets, and our long-term goal of achieving a science-based net zero target by 2050 including our Scope 3 emissions. Carbon Footprint As a supplier with our own fleet of vehicles, we have more control over factors that affect the efficiency of our vehicles. That is why 100% of our Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles are Euro VI compliant and we have introduced 3 electric vehicles to our fleet. Improvements such as these, alongside improvements in our warehouse energy efficiency, has led to Greenham becoming 24.4% more carbon efficient since 2019. Our actual Scope 1 and 2 emissions have fallen by 24% since 2019, with a 5% fall since 2021.

Fuel Consumption With restrictions lifted, 2022 has seen the first year of business being ‘open as usual’, enabling our teams to visit customers. Despite an increase in travel compared to 2021 and 2020, we have reduced our fuel consumption by 8% from 2021, and 24% since 2019. This is primarily due to the uptake of technology to conduct meetings online, working with customers to create smarter ordering profiles and vehicle optimisation. The amount of diesel used in our commercial vehicles has fallen 15.1% since 2019, largely due to the continued use of vehicle telematics and our route optimization system, Verizon Connect. 2022 has seen our second year with the permanent inclusion of solar film matting in our fleet. Now on board 7 vehicles in Greenham, this technology charges an auxiliary battery powering the lights, heating, radio and, most importantly, the tail lift. In September 2022, Greenham took delivery of two new electric 3.5t delivery vans, increasing the total in our fleet to three. These EV delivery vans, based in Manchester and Tottenham, are providing zero emissions deliveries to local customers whilst supporting a decrease in the overall footprint of Greenham deliveries.

Electricity Consumption As more staff have returned to office working, we have seen an increase in electricity consumption of 14% compared to 2021. Despite this, we have continued to see a reduction in our electricity consumption by 3% compared to our baseline year of 2019. This is predominantly due to further warehouses installing LED lighting and motion sensors and a conscious effort to waste less energy. We are supplied with 100% renewable electricity from REGO-backed sources. In 2022, over half of the electricity supplied was generated using wind power (53%) with the remaining electricity being sourced from bioenergy (29.8%), solar (13.6%) and hydropower (3.6%). This is one step towards Bunzl plc target of groupwide renewable electricity procurement by 2030.

Waste Management At Greenham, we recognise the importance of reducing waste in the supply chain. We are looking at packaging use and materials throughout the supply chain to understand how we can reduce waste and promote the use of more recyclable and reusable packaging solutions. We currently reuse our inbound packaging for outbound deliveries to keep the material in use for longer and reduce waste in the supply chain. In 2021, we successfully removed single-use packaging from our range of KeepSAFE ® gloves by replacing the plastic bags with recyclable header cards, preventing around 2.2 million pieces of single-use plastic from entering the supply chain every year. In 2022, we swapped our plastic packaging tape to a recyclable water-based gum paper tape, preventing over 4,000 kg of single-use plastic entering the supply chain and ultimately ending up in landfill.

Plastic Use Reduction SUSTAINABILITY SUCCESS STORY

As part of the Bunzl Sustainability Strategy, responsible supply chain is one of the key themes. This requires us to commit to becoming a responsible supplier to our customers. Across the business this has manifested in many ways, but one simple yet effective change is in our packaging operations. Many of our Service Centres across Cleaning & Safety have made a change in their packaging process by swapping plastic packaging tape to a paper gum-based tape. Some sites have taken a step further and invested in machines that provide their operators with pre-cut lengths of paper tape to save time and increase efficiency by reducing waste. Across the board, all sites have seen savings in both cost of consumables and plastic waste. Our Wednesbury site that serves our NSS, Lee Brothers, Protec and WBT orders has seen the greatest savings of all. Since investing in 5 tape machines and make the swap to paper tape, the site is expecting to total savings on consumables per annum of £2,770 and 1,005kg of plastic. The individual savings of each Service Centre are dependent on the volume of products processed at that site, however the average annual saving per Service Centre is 219 kg of plastic. If all Service Centres within Greenham make the swap, we could be saving over 4000 kg of plastic alone – the equivalent weight of two rhinos.

Waste Management Across our Service Centres, we have challenged the way we secure goods to pallets to reduce our use of hard-to-recycle pallet wrap. During 2022, we set up trials for pallet wrap alternatives that included reusable pallet nets, reusable pallet straps and paper strapping. Safe and secure delivery is our number one priority, ensuring our delivery drivers are kept safe and our customers’ goods are secure, which is why we have found there is no single solution. We work with our customers to find the best alternative that suits them, and in cases where no alternative is available, we have swapped our 100% virgin pallet wrap to a wrap with at least 30% recycled content. Partnered with an automatic wrapping machine, our Midlands Service Centre alone has reduced their plastic consumption by 1020kg a year. As we head into 2023, we will continue our trend of reducing single-use plastics from both our products and operations. We also work with Community Wood Recycling (CWR), who collect our wooden pallets for reuse and recycling. CWR work to support the circular economy by taking disused wood and finding the most appropriate route for the material, either upcycling the wood into new products, processing it into firewood or recycling it into woodchip. This way, all of the wood collected is able to re-enter the supply chain. As well as saving resources, the CWR scheme helps change lives too; in 2022, they collected over 24,000 tonnes of wood, provided 10,637 days of training and saved 10,000 tonnes of CO 2 .

Community Wood Recycling is a network of social enterprises collecting and reusing waste wood in the most environmentally beneficial way while creating jobs and training for disadvantaged people. Our service is based on the principles of the circular economy; by saving wood we are building a more sustainable society. We promote community reuse, one of the most powerful tools available to fight waste. This labour-intensive activity provides a wide range of disadvantaged people - including those recovering from substance abuse or from mental health issues, people with learning difficulties and ex-offenders - with a way to build their confidence and self-esteem. They are able to learn new skills, helping them to overcome barriers to finding employment. Impact estimates are calculated based on the volume of wood collected and the total network social outcomes during the year of collection. Charity Partnership A charity partnership is a powerful relationship through which we can support and fundraise for important matters. At Bunzl Greenham, we recognise the importance of supporting mental health within the workforce, which is why we have been partnered with Mates in Mind for four years, during which we have raised £30,039 . Mates in Mind is a leading UK charity that enables employers to improve their workforce’s mental health. 3 out of 5 employees experience mental health issues because of work and we believe this needs to change. Mates in Mind provide the skills, clarity and confidence to employers on how to raise awareness, improve understanding and address the stigma of mental health. The charity’s unique approach aims to; 1. Educate and inform the workforce 2. Support an organisation in creating the right programme for them 3. Visibly support the framework throughout the organisation with relevant and accessible communication materials 4. Help build an evidence base In 2022, Greenham raised £3,905 for Mates in Mind as part of the Bunzl Safety Board charity Beach Clean (see page 17). As organisations across the sector began to adjust to the new normal, Mates in Mind continued to see an increase in their reach into small businesses who sought guidance and tools to support their workforces’ mental health needs. With the support of Bunzl Greenham’s donations, Mates in Mind were able to provide access to mental health resources, training and consultation to over 400 organisations as well dedicate their team to vital research into vulnerable workers in the industry.

“I would like to convey a huge thank you and well done to the team at Bunzl Greenham for reaching nearly £9k in donations to Mates in Mind. Your ongoing fundraising support is very much appreciated and enables the charity to reach even more people by raising awareness of mental health and creating supportive workplaces with a focus on prevention. Community At Greenham, we want to be a part of the communities that we work within. In addition to our chosen charity, Mates in Mind, we commit to raising funds and helping charities, businesses and communities local to our Service Centres. In 2022, our teams enjoyed a bake and brew on the Worlds Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support. Other charities our Service Centres have supported include The Trussel Trust Food Bank, World Wildlife Fund and Alzheimer’s Society. Every employee has one day’s paid volunteering leave to support a cause of their choice. Across our employees, we can give back over 4900 hours of volunteering every year. This year our Midlands Service Centre hosted The Big Fish event in support of the RBLI. The event was attended by over 30 keen anglers from our customer base, the Greenham Team and some veterans, providing wellbeing and relaxation for the veterans whilst raising over £9,922 to fund the ongoing work of the RBLI. Also our board of directors took to the North East on a beach clean mission. Over two days, the team cleaned 7 beaches, walked 18.5 miles and collected 111 bin bags of rubbish, whilst raising £15,623. The money raised supported the ongoing work and vital support provided by the following charities; Maggies, Samaritans, British Heart Foundation and Mates in Mind. Total funds raised in 2022 £34,104

The Spear programme helps young people facing disadvantage into work or education by equipping them with the skills and mindset they need to succeed in employment or education through a highly interactive 6-week coaching program. As part of this, the trainees have the opportunity to experience a professional environment through company visits. The Greenham London Service Centre hosted a fun and interactive introduction into the world of work, comprising of an office tour, group presentations and workshops. Why is it important? Many of the trainees have never had a job or have sporadic work histories and thus they often struggle to imagine themselves as being successful in the workplace. The company visit offers them the chance to envision what they could achieve. You can read more about the program here.

With the high increase in Mental Health due to the unprecedented pressures of modern living the course has given me the confidence to help support the team and point them in the right direction. The contents of the day made the course enjoyable with a variation of practical and theory.”

“The Mental Health First Aid Training course gave me not only a recognised certificate but has enabled me to support employees with their mental health issues in the workplace as an HR Manager. The topics covered gave me an insight into some of the more common mental health conditions and the skills to be able to signpost individuals along the appropriate pathways. I was part of a cohort of exceptionally talented individuals from across the Bunzl Safety and Cleaning Divisions, many of whom I had not had the chance to previously work with. The programme allowed me to develop strong professional relationships with these individuals, through masterclasses and projects where we brought out the best in each other. Through the programme, I also experienced the many key functions that make up Bunzl, which included dedicated learning sessions led by senior leaders within the company. These sessions allowed me to engage with experts in their respective fields and gave me a better understanding of the wider business outside of my current scope. The many aspects of the programme have allowed me to expand on my current skillset, as well as develop a wide variety of new skills, and I look forward to the opportunity this programme has provided to advance my career further.

The initiative aims to identify high potential female employees and support their development into senior leadership team positions to foster an inclusive and diverse management team. 2022 saw the extension of the Inspiring Women in Bunzl initiative. We saw the regional networks expand further into our local operating companies due to the rapid growth of members, members continue to have a presence with our Senior leadership team at board meetings across BUKI and drive some amazing educational initiatives throughout our business including Unconscious Bias and Imposter syndrome. The percentage of women in leadership roles is now 28% across BUKI.

This has helped people to better understand important events such as Black History Month and recognise special celebrations such as Diwali, Yom Kippur and Eid. During National Inclusion Week, our Culture Club ran a campaign to encourage colleagues to learn more about each other and celebrate our diversity.

Jarn Gill

Over the past 2 years, we have made great progress with our Inspiring Ethnicity in Bunzl focus. The team shared “safe space” sessions with senior management teams which really enabled people to ask those sensitive questions that they were not sure about asking for fear of being judged. The sessions went down really well, and these were rolled out out to other teams members during 2022. Throughout the year the team also provided great information on different topics from Yom Kippur to Diwali to Christmas and took part in National Inclusion Week across the BUKI. We also had time with Bunzl plc’s senior management team and again were able to do a “safe space” session together with our colleagues from Bunzl North America. Across Bunzl the topic of diversity is high on the agenda and the importance of being an inclusive business is recognised and we will continue our focus on ethnicity.

Carbon Forecasting

Using our advanced Verizon Connect route management system, our Sustainability Advisor, Stephanie Neumann has analysed 12 months of deliveries and believes by working together, we could reduce deliveries by 8%, resulting in a potential carbon saving of a huge 2,588kg of CO 2 . Below is a short summary: Carbon Forecast Summary Example

We show how small changes to our customers’ delivery and ordering profiles could reduce carbon emissions and environmental impact. Using Carbon Forecasting, we are able to demonstrate how small changes to our customers’ delivery and ordering profiles could reduce the carbon emissions and environmental impact we share. In the report, we show how small changes in ordering patterns and product choices can impact carbon emissions. We believe that communication is key to engagement. To promote effective communication, each report includes a breakdown of what the potential carbon emission savings look like in real terms, such as miles driven. This enables our customers to communicate the impact with their teams and drive real change in their businesses and supply chain.

Carbon Offsetting Service

This programme encourages changing behaviours and can offset delivery emissions to support our customers’ sustainability strategies. Whilst we do not see carbon offsetting as the solution to achieving net zero, we think it is important to account for the carbon emissions we can’t yet remove. Our customers are invited to participate in Carbon Offsetting to offset the emissions associated with their deliveries through Verified Carbon Standard schemes. This programme encourages changing behaviours and helps support our customers’ sustainability strategies. The offsets we support operate as a Tree Buddying scheme, meaning that UK tree planting projects are paired with Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) approved carbon credits to guarantee the carbon offsetting. This provides robust offsetting, together with the biodiversity and community benefits that tree planting brings. Projects supported by the Tree Buddying scheme are updated regularly, and vary from wind power projects in India to reducing deforestation in Brazil, Cambodia and Indonesia. UK tree planting schemes buddied with these projects pledge trees to schools and biodiversity sites across all 12 regions of the UK and Ireland where children can get involved in planting native broad leaf trees. Sites that have benefitted from these trees are plotted on a map which you can view here.

PPE Recycling At Greenham, our customers have access to a PPE recycling service that helps to prevent worn and disused PPE from entering landfill. We can offer 240L or 1100L secure, lockable units or 16kg sacks that are collected on a regular basis from customer locations by our recycling partner. Their fleet are unbranded, GPS tracked and CCTV monitored for maximum security, with a certificate of destruction provided so customers can be assured that any branded PPE and workwear is handled appropriately through the waste management process. Our PPE Recycling service can accept all head-to-toe PPE and workwear, with the exception of used face masks, via the same container provided it is not contaminated with any substances controlled by COSHH regulations. Once collected, the waste is separated into three tiers, with energy recovery being considered a last resort for PPE collected via our recycling partner. Tier 1 is the primary and preferred route for recycled clothing, where the material is able to be rewoven for future manufacturing of new garments. Tier 2 is the secondary route for recycling materials back into a range of difference products such as insulation, partition walls and sound boarding. Any remaining waste that is currently non-recyclable is then sent for energy recovery (RDF) or melted to create polyester fabrics. Tier 3 is the last route to avoid landfill, if the two above are not possible. Any remaining waste that is currently non-recyclable is sent for energy recovery(RDF) or melted to create polyester fabrics.

Sustainable Product Award At Greenham, we have been working hard to develop a Sustainable Product Award, a visual indicator of a product’s sustainability to support decision-making by using an objective set of key sustainable attributes. An assessment of a customer’s contract quickly shows customers the sustainability performance of the products they choose against the selected criteria and helps to align alternatives with their priorities, whether it’s about plastics, non-toxic chemicals or recyclability. The Sustainable Product Award enables customers to make informed decisions on the products they buy, improves access to sustainable choices and drives positive change through our supply chain. Producer We assess the accreditation of the producer against ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001, environmental initiatives such as Net Zero target & energy supply, and Social Value such as charitable causes and corporate responsibility. Each product will be individually assessed and scored on it's sustainability based on the following:

Production We assess the geographical sourcing of materials, the main manufacture of the product and environmental initiatives such as water saving during manufacture.

Product We score the product on criteria such as materials used, their environmental impact at end-of-life and whether the product is eco-labelled.

Packaging We assess for both primary and secondary packaging, the sourcing and type of materials and inks used, end-of-life and closed-loop solutions.

Once a product has been scored, it will receive an overall award of Bronze, Silver or Gold.

Please bear with us whilst we work through all of our product categories.
