2 A guide to standards
A guide to EN 388 – Mechanical Hand Protection
Gloves are assessed for their level of protection against mechanical risks according to the European Standard EN 388. EN 388 is a European standard that assesses the mechanical resistance of protective gloves, evaluating their performance against abrasion, cut, tear, puncture and impact risks. Each protection level is indicated by a scales rating of A-F for cut resistance and 1-4 for abrasion, tear and puncture. The impact test is denoted by a P or F showing a pass or fail. EN388:2003 was amended in 2016 to cover the increased cut resistance of new technological yarns and materials.
A new higher cut resistant TDM test ISO 13997 was introduced to give more accuracy to higher performing products which were significantly out-performing the maximum level 5 under the previous EN388:2003 coup test. Having identified the nature of the physical hazard protection you need, whether it’s against abrasion, blade cuts, tears, punctures or impact, the results of this testing should be referred to when selecting gloves.
Glove Coatings Mechanical handling gloves feature a range of coatings to suit different environments. For example:
• Sandy / foam / microfoam nitirile for oily conditions.
• Polyurethane (PU) for dry and light oily conditions and extra dexterity.
• Textured latex for wet conditions.
• Foam latex for wet and dry conditions.

Key points about EN 388
Example of an EN 388 rating
What it tests • Abrasion, low level cut (coup test), tear, puncture, high level cut (TDM test) and impact. Rating system • Each test is assigned a number: Abrasion (1-4), Coup Cut Test (1-5), Tear (1-4), Puncture (1-4), TDM Cut Test (A-F), Impact Test (Pass or Fail). How to interpret the rating • First number: Abrasion resistance • Second number: Coup cut test for lower performing cut resistance products • Third number: Tear resistance • Fourth number: Puncture resistance • Fifth Letter - TDM cut test for higher performing cut resistant products • Sixth Letter: Impact test Important considerations • “X” marking: If a glove is not tested for a specific category, it will be marked with an “X”. • Cut resistance levels: Recent updates to the standard include additional cut resistance levels denoted by letters (A-F) with “F” being the highest level.

Colour Coding
Colours help us recognise difference... Safety gloves come in all different colours, mainly due to the different yarns used in the knitting process and also the addition of the coating. The colour of the glove is usually the thing that makes it most instantly recognisable and therefore making it very easy to distinguish the difference between one glove and another. The main part of the glove covering the fingers and palm is knitted using coloured yarn then coated to add a layer of protection. Moving down into the cuff, you will sometimes see a slight or total change of colour and this is where elastication is intensified to ensure the glove fits well around the heel of the hand where it starts to narrow into the wrist.
Know your glove size at a glance... Moving down from the three to four inch band of elastication, you will see a narrow yet strong band of over-stitching which serves two different purposes. Firstly it acts as a neat and secure hem to the glove which prevents the yarn from fraying and finishes off the cuff in a tidy fashion so it sits comfortably against the wrist. Secondly it provides a quick and easy way of identifying the size of the glove at a glance. Each different size of glove will be hemmed in a different colour yarn, the colour of the yarn denotes the size.

Sustainability Overview
Gloves that help meet your sustainability targets
Designing for our future The Keepsafe ECO gloves have been carefully designed to recognise the global environmental future. Our focus has been to achieve new product manufacture through recycled materials, leading to the design and production against a recyclable theme.
The raw material base utilises post consumer polyester, re-polymerised into high quality filament yarn to provide gloves with a content as high as 63% recycled material within our KeepSAFE ECO brand range. This new technological yarn development reduces landfill measures by 670kg for every 25,000 pairs of gloves produced – a substantial environmental result.

ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
A U.S. organisation that sets safety standards, including for protective gloves.
Anti-Static Gloves
Gloves designed to prevent static electricity build up, commonly used in electronics and explosive environments.
Breakthrough Time
The time it takes for a chemical to pass through glove material, indicating its level of chemical resistance.
Chemical-Resistant Gloves
Gloves made from materials like nitrile, neoprene, or PVC, designed to protect against chemical exposure.

A reaction some individuals experience when exposed to natural rubber latex gloves, often leading to the use of nitrile or vinyl alternatives.
Microfoam Nitrile
A breathable coating that enhances grip and comfort while maintaining high dexterity, often used in general handling gloves.
Mil Thickness
A measurement of glove thickness, often used for disposable gloves. One mil = 0.001 inches.
Nitrile
A synthetic rubber material commonly used in gloves for chemical, cut, and oil resistance.
Palm Coated Gloves
Gloves that have a protective coating only on the palm and fingers, improving grip while keeping the back of the hand breathable.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Equipment worn to minimise exposure to workplace hazards, such as safety gloves.
Puncture Resistance
A glove’s ability to withstand sharp object penetration, tested under EN 388.
Reinforced Thumb Crotch
A reinforced area between the thumb and index finger for extra durability in high-wear areas.
Tactile Sensitivity
The ability to feel objects and perform delicate tasks while wearing gloves.
Tear Resistance
A glove’s ability to resist tearing when stretched or stressed, rated under EN 388.
Touchscreen Compatibility
Gloves designed with conductive materials that allow the use of touchscreen devices without removal.
Vibration-Resistant Gloves

Glove Hand Size Chart
To find the correct glove size, measure the circumference of your dominant hand around the widest part of your palm (excluding the thumb) and compare it with the chart below. Wearing a glove that is too small could cut off the blood circulation in the hand as well as restrict hand movement. Wearing a that glove is too big means it could potentially slide off making it unsafe to handle objects. If the size is not correct it will increase the chance of sustaining an injury.
