APPENDIX EXPLANATION Reflective Materials

Reflective materials are usually made from glass beads and are applied onto an adhesive-backed tape. This tape is then sealed to the fluorescent fabric of the garments in specific high-contrast patterns to optimise visibility and follow body contours, helping to define the human form so that others can quickly recognise a person. The reflective efficiency declines with regular washing as the glass beads deteriorate. Consequently, these garments have a certified lifespan, often limited to around 25 washes, after which they may no longer meet safety standards. Heat applied reflective tape, also known as iron-on or heat-transfer reflective tape, is attached to garments using heat and pressure. The primary advantage of heat applied reflective tape is that it forms a flat, seamless bond with the garment, which can be more comfortable for the wearer and can maintain the garment’s flexibility. Additionally, it provides a smooth finish that does not puncture the fabric, which is beneficial for waterproof or water-resistant materials as it maintains the garment’s intergrity against moisture.

Heat Applied Tape

Stitched Tape

Stitched reflective tape is sewn directly onto the garment, stitching the tape around its edges to secure it to the fabric. Stitched tape is very durable and less likely to peel off than heat-applied tape, particularly through repeated washes and rigorous wear.

Ballistic

Ballistic fabrics are robust, high-strength materials engineered to shield against intense abrasion and tearing. Constructed from densely woven fibres (such as Kevlar ® , Dyneema ® , or Nylon) these fabrics are essential in work settings with physical hazards, like construction, manufacturing or utilities. Ballistic clothing reduces the risk of injuries from sharp items, abrasive surfaces, as well as increasing the longevity and durability of the garments.
